Formerly an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of New York, Peter represents clients in a range of white-collar criminal, securities, and civil matters matters, including cases involving marketing practices and insider trading, money laundering, fraud, bribery, tax evasion, antitrust violations, RICO, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He also has extensive experience handling trials and investigations (internal, governmental, and regulatory).
Peter also is sought after for his representation of parties in high profile sports litigation and disputes. His clientele includes well-known players and coaches across leagues and sports organizations. By way of example, Peter represented NFL linebacker Jonathan Vilma in the highly publicized New Orleans Saints “bounty” cases; running back Ray Rice in his successful challenge to Commissioner Roger Goodell’s disciplinary authority; and two position players on the Minnesota Vikings in the so-called “StarCaps” litigation that involved an over-the-counter weight loss medication and a groundbreaking challenge to the NFL’s efforts to circumvent state law protection for employees. Peter has handled litigation, intellectual property, and endorsement matters for several athletes, including for basketball player Kawhi Leonard. Likewise, he has litigated on behalf of golf pro Vijay Singh against the PGA Tour, alleging that the organization violated its duty of fair dealing in administering its disciplinary process; represented golfer Patrick Reed, tennis star Madison Brengle, former NFL wide receiver and current commentator Michael Irvin, and former NHL standout Slava Fetisov; and has worked to protect the rights of coaches, including Hall of Famers Larry Brown and Les Miles, and student-athletes and coaches with regard to NCAA actions and university oversight. Peter represents sports agencies and agents as well.
Given his involvement in so many newsworthy cases, Peter often finds himself mentioned or otherwise quoted in a variety of media outlets—USA Today, Sports Illustrated, CNBC, ESPN, NBC, CBS, Yahoo Lifestyle, The National Law Review, Law 360, and New York Law Journal, among them, and is a frequent lecturer at law schools around the country.
